Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ's)

Below are some of the frequently questions we receive from people wanting to obtain a Bernese Mountain Dog.  It is our hope these answers will better assist you in deciding if a Berner is the breed for you.

Do Bernese Mountain Dogs drool?

No, not in the traditional sense of drooling.  The Bernese Mountain is a Dry Mouth Breed, but like any other animal, they may salivate when anticipating a treat or meal.

What is the size of the males at High Alps Kennels?

Our males range in weight between 95 to 120 pounds (43 - 54 kg), and are about 26 to 27 inches (66 - 68 cm) in height.

What is the size of the females at High Alps Kennels?

Our females range in weight between 80 to 95 pounds (36 - 43 kg), and are about 25 to 26 inches (63.5 - 66 cm) in height.

What kind of health problems are the Bernese Mountain Dog susceptible to?

As with any large breed dog, the Bernese Mt. Dog can experience health issues such as cancers and tumors, bloat, and hip or elbow dyplasia.  We at High Alps Kennels also have our breeding dogs eyes examined to insure no congenital eye disorders or eye diseases are being passed along.  This is not to say the Bernese Mt. Dog is at any lesser or greater risk for health issues than any other large breed dog.  A good, high quality canine diet, plenty of exercise, routine veterinary care, and lots of love increase the chances any dog will experience a long, healthy life.

What is the life span of the Bernese Mountain Dog?

The average life span of the Bernese Mt. Dog is 8 to 9 years.  However, many Berner's have lived well into their teenage years.

Do Bernese Mountain Dogs shed?

Yes.  Berners will shed heavily after the winter( in cold climates), and then very lightly during the heat of the summer (in warm climates).  The females will typically "blow their coat" (a major shed) prior to or just after a heat cycle, or after nursing a litter.  Puppies will typically blow their coat after about one year of age.  Weekly brushing is good during a light shed - daily brushing may be required during a major shed.  The duration of a major shed is typically about two weeks (but varies from dog to dog).

What is the disposition or personality of the Bernese Mountain Dog?

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a good family pet.  It is not a wandering dog, and may be aloof with strangers.  Berner's like most other animals.  They are not an aggressive breed, but like to sniff to get to know strangers.

THE BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG IS NOT A FIGHTING DOG, AND SHOULD NEVER BE PLACED INTO ANY FIGHTING SITUATION OR ATMOSPHERE.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is NOT a water dog, and does not like to swim - although some Berner's have been known to wade into the shallow water of a lake or stream and plop down during high summer heat.  Bernese Mountain Dogs do not like the summer heat.  They will seek out a cool place to lay.

Many Bernese Mountain Dogs have been known to dive head first into snow banks.  They thrive in cold weather and love to play in the snow.

As with any pet, DO NOT over-expose the Bernese Mountain Dog to extreme cold or heat for extended periods of time, and make sure plenty of fresh water is constantly available for them to drink.  Never leave a pet (or child) in an unattended vehicle at any time.

The Bernese Mountain Dog loves to be petted, hugged, and loved.  They sometimes act like love-starved dogs.  Watch out for the "Berner Bump" (the nudging of their snout under a person's arm).  It can sometimes occur at the most inopportune time.

What is the energy level of the Bernese Mountain Dog?

The Bernese Mountain Dog is generally a low key breed.  They do sometimes get excited when guests arrive and are friendly, and they love to play when in the mood.

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a Working Breed Dog, AND IS VERY STRONG!  It was bred to pull carts and sleds in the High Alps.  Never allow a small child to control a Bernese Mountain Dog on a leash or lead without adult supervision.

Does the Bernese Mountain Dog make a good guard dog?

No, the Bernese Mountain Dog is not a guard dog, but will bark and alert an owner when people arrive, or when a stranger or unknown animal is in their vicinity.

Is the Bernese Mountain Dog good with children?

Yes, especially if raised with children.  The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large breed dog, and small children should always have adult supervision when playing with a Berner (due to the size and weight difference).
